Tommy Shaffer Shane

In his role as Senior Policy Manager, Tommy leads a range of workstreams, with a particular focus on preparedness for transformative AI and its impacts and incidents, and loss of control risks. From policy and advocacy, to academic research and product development, he brings to CLTR over 10 years of experience leading teams working on technological risks and has worked on AI since 2018. Prior to joining CLTR, Tommy worked at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, where he led a team delivering a £10m programme to develop novel AI techniques to analyse disinformation impacting UK national security, alongside conducting risk assessments of epistemic risks from frontier AI and developing policy responses. His academic research examines AI incidents and how they can be monitored and actioned, as part of his PhD at King’s College London. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Cambridge.
