About CLTR

The Centre for Long-Term Resilience (CLTR) is an independent think tank with a mission to transform global resilience to extreme risks, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and biosecurity.

Extreme risks are high impact threats with global reach. They have the potential to devastate lives and economies around the world. Examples include natural or AI engineered pandemics, the handover of increasing control of important decisions to AI, AI-driven threats to democracies, or major accidents from the use of AI in critical national infrastructure.

We are based in the heart of Westminster and works with governments and other institutions to improve relevant governance, processes, and decision making.

We have three organisational values that guide our behaviour:

i) people first,

ii) targeted real-world impact, and

iii) integrity.

You would be joining a kind, motivated and talented team with big ambitions for the future.

What we are looking for

CLTR is looking for an exceptional and committed new Senior Adviser, Advocacy and Communications. The successful applicant will advise CLTR’s three policy units on advocacy strategy, help deliver this strategy, build and strengthen our policy networks, and ensure that we communicate effectively to key policy and fundraising stakeholders.

Your responsibilities would be to:

  • Provide strategic and tactical advice across three policy units (artificial intelligence, biosecurity and risk management) and effectively engage with key political, civil service, and other stakeholders, primarily in Westminster, but also internationally.
  • Develop and deliver a clear CLTR approach to advocacy strategy across the organisation’s policy units and standardising practices where needed.
  • Work closely with policy units to ensure key policy priorities are communicated effectively to targeted audiences.
  • Lead and oversee the relationship with CLTR’s communications agency and freelancers.
  • Work closely with the Director of Strategic Partnerships to ensure the team’s work and impact is communicated effectively to current and prospective funders and their advisers.
  • Work closely with the senior Leadership Team to support the organisation’s strategic direction and team culture.

You would be a good fit for this position if you have:

  • Exceptional advocacy experience in the UK (and ideally in the other key markets/institutions)
  • A detailed understanding of the workings of UK government
  • Excellent media and strategic communications skills
  • Strong networks within government and media
  • Strong experience and interest in helping to drive a thriving, supportive, and inclusive team culture
  • General understanding and interest of extreme AI and biological risks, and motivation to help CLTR achieve its mission of transforming global resilience to these risks
  • Are a high agency person – a self-starter who is able to deliver on key priorities with significant autonomy

We want the best people and don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every colour, orientation, age, gender, origin and ability to apply. If you are passionate about CLTR’s mission and think you have what it takes to support us, even if you don’t check all the boxes, please apply. We’d appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.

Excellent benefits at CLTR include:

  • Salary: £80,000-£90,000
  • £5,000 annual wellbeing allowance (to be spent at your discretion)
  • A pension contribution scheme (up to 7% employer-matched contribution)
  • Generous parental leave entitlements
  • £3,000 annual grant for your learning and development
  • Hybrid working (3 days per week in the office including Mondays)

Working at CLTR means using your experiences, skills and passion to contribute to our mission of transforming global resilience to extreme risks. You’ll have purposeful and committed colleagues working to make CLTR as good as it can be. CLTR’s mission is huge and feels personal for everyone in the team, so you’ll be working alongside people who care as much about their work as you do.
